Update from AGM

Chairman of Allen Valley Angling and Conservation

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the inaugural annual general meeting of Allen Valley Angling & Conservation such a success.  Almost 30 people came along to the event, which took place on 2nd February, 2012 at the Allendale Inn in Allendale Market Square.

In addition to our members, we were delighted that three invited guests were able to join us - thank you to Roddy Findlay (Land Factor), Carol Dalton (Fawside) and Charlie Cooper (Chairman of Hexham Anglers).

2011 - An Eventful First Year

The re-establishment of an angling club on the River East Allen started in early 2011 when Paul Frear approached Land Factor to talk through his ideas. Having secured a licence, Paul then set about striking up support from the local community and the club was formed. We are rightly proud of what has been achieved in our first year and updated our members by showing a short video at the AGM.

For those members and guests who were unable to attend - as well as those non-members who are visiting this website, (perhaps thinking about becoming a member or supporting the club in some way), we've uploaded this video to our YouTube Channel and invite you to share in the major landmarks and achievements by playing the video now. (see right)

2012 - A Year to Focus on Conservation

During 2011, an extensive audit of the river was undertaken in order to identify the major conservation and river management efforts required on the River East Allen. From this audit, three projects have been identified as priorities for 2012. See our conservation page for details of all three projects.  You can also take a virtual tour of the river from the fishing beat page, which uses pictures taken as part of the river audit.

Project 1

Eradication of Himalayan Balsam:

We estimate that it is possible to completely eradicate this non-native, highly invasive plant from the source of the River East Allen to our bottom limit at Allendale within 3 years.

Benefits:

  • Allow native plant species to re-establish
  • Over time, stabilisation of river banks
  • Benefits to riparian owners
  • Improve success rates of similar projects downstream
  • Funding may be available

Special Thanks

Our thanks go to Ian and Nicky at the Allendale Inn for laying on such a great spread! Also to Brian Lowrey, who offered to produce our river signage at cost price as well as donate a strimmer and to Roddy Findlay, (Land Factor) for offering to remove fallen trees at Tedham. Finally to everyone who came and pledged their time to support the river conservation projects.
